![]() It’s not a traditional novel in that not only is it not plot-driven, it barely seems to have a plot at all. ![]() Since The House on Mango Street is so short, it probably takes less than an hour to read and seems like it’s over really, really quickly. It was interesting to learn about all the offbeat people the main character knew and how even though she was struggling with different issues in her life, there were other people who had it so much worse. I liked the prose in this book, it was simple and straightforward but at the same time has a quality that made it feel meaningful. The book is narrated by a young Hispanic girl of indeterminate age named Esperanza, who portrays the lives of eccentric neighbors in the colorful but impoverished neighborhood where she lives with her family. The House on Mango Street is extremely short and you can easily finish it in one sitting, it’s not written in verse but sometimes it reads like a series of interconnected poems because of the rhythmic quality of the prose. ![]() I wasn’t that interested in reading this book for a long time, but then when I found out it was going to be on my 15-year-old sister’s high school reading list I decided to give it a try and see what I thought of it’s ‘classic’ status. ![]()
